Daughter of Fire: Book Review!

On first hearing about this book, I knew that it'd be one I'd enjoy and the lovely Stacey Willis sent me a copy to review! Can I just say, the hardcover copy of the book is really pretty! I've included a photograph of the book without the dustjacket so that you can all see it!

This book started very quickly and dove straight into the action! Within the first fifth of the book, the main storyline had begun and we were introduced to most of the main characters. I immediately got Scythe vibes from the book, although with the young adult cheese-factors of books like Crave! I actually really enjoyed this cheesiness as it felt nostalgic and wasn't done in a cringey way. It felt very YA and I appreciated this being done with slightly older characters (Savannah turns 18 in the book).

Character introductions were done well and I really liked most of the characters. Søren was a really well thought out character who grew as the book progressed. He had a multi-dimensional personality and surprised me at times! I also really liked Hades' portrayal! Although he seems cocky and arrogant, he's actually very human and I though this was a clever presentation, rather than the expected Hades character! I didn't, however, connect very well with Savannah. She was very moody (which I can understand given her circumstance) but didn't really lighten up as much as I wanted her to! I did enjoy her sarcasm and that she was very outspoken, however she annoyed me at times. I liked seeing her mature towards to end and I think that in the next book she may have grown a little!

The storyline was really engaging and a lot happened in the book. It felt like a real roller coaster journey from start to end. The story was told from multiple points of view which contributed to how fast paced and dynamic the book felt! It combined urban and high fantasy elements which was really cool and something that I feel is underappreciated in the fantasy genre! I rated the book 4 stars because I really enjoyed it! I'd have liked a little romance (although this is personal taste and not a criticism of the book in any way!)

I'm really looking forward to continuing to read Savannah's story in Son of Death and I gave this book 4/5 stars!
